Maaliskuussa Koski-seura sai Päijät-Hämeen Liiton koordinoiman LOTTI Interreg Europe -hankkeen vetäjältä Markku Lehikoiselta harvinaisen kutsun. Huhtikuun lopulla Espanjan Cantabrian maakunnassa pidettävään projektin seuraavan tapaamiseen tarvittiin esimerkki paikallisen identiteetin ylläpitäjästä. Tässä mielessä jo lähes 8 vuoden ikään varttunut Kosken kohinat -verkkojulkaisu oli herättänyt Markun huomion. Cantabriassa oli nimittäin tarkoitus teeman pohjalta esitellä eri maiden hyviä käytänteitä. Tällä teemalla myös Päijänne-Leaderin johtava asiantuntija Jukka-Pekka Jauhiainen oli lähdössä matkalle mukaan esittelemään Avoimet Kylät -konseptin, joka jo kymmenen vuoden ajan on markkinoinut kylien elämää sekä nykyisille että uusille asukkaille.
Kosken kohinoiden esittelijäksi seuran hallituksesta valikoitui allekirjoittanut. Esittelimme eri maiden käytänteitä lyhyesti ennakkoon netin välityksellä Teams-palaverissa 10.4.2024. Varsinainen kokoontuminen toteutui 17.-19.4.2024. Tuolloin projektin edustajat Suomesta, Espanjasta, Puolasta, Irlannista, Ranskasta ja Italiasta kokoontuivat kauniiseen Santanderin kaupunkiin Pohjois-Espanjassa.

Ensimmäisenä kokouspäivänä matkustimme läheiseen Torrelavegan kaupunkiin. Chamber of Commers -rakennuksessa kokoustimme OECD:n edustajien kanssa siitä, kuinka kansalaiset voisivat paremmin osallistua päätöksen tekoon siitä, mitä hankkeita EU rahoittaa. Sitten tutustuimme La Lechere -taidekeskukseen esimerkkinä teollisesta murroksesta. Siellä kunnostetaan entisen maitojauhetehtaan tiloja taidekeskukseksi, tietenkin teollista ja taiteellista historiaa kunnioittaen.

Santanderissa nautimme illallista paikalliseen tapaan melko myöhään. La Taberna de Herrero -ravintolassa oli tarjolla runsas kattaus meren herkkuja. Ilma oli kaupungissa illallakin leutoa, kun päivisin lämpötila nousi jopa +16 asteeseen. Aika ajoin seudulla satoikin, varmaan osin Atlantin valtameren läheisyyden takia.

Toisena kokouspäivänä matkasimme jälleen Torrelavegan kaupunkiin. Paikalla oli nyt Cantabrian Eurooppa-hallinnon sekä Torrelavegan kaupungin hallinnon edustajia. Tutustuimme myös kokousrakennuksessa toteutettavaan monipuoliseen nuorisokoulutukseen. Lounastauolla saimme myös nauttia talon harjoituskeittiön tuottamista herkuista. Sitten olikin projektin sidosryhmien aika esitellä kunkin maan hyviä käytänteitä.

Palaverin jälkeen esittelijöille jäi hieman aikaa kävellen tutustua kaupungin keskustaan. Itse halusin käydä kuvaamassa kaupunkiympäristöä. Samalla tuli hankittua tuliaiset kotiin.

Illallista nautimme jälleen Santanderissa, tällä kertaa Bodega la Conveniente -ravintolassa. Illanviettojen yhteydessä syntyi paljon iloista vuorovaikutusta eri maiden edustajien kanssa. Keskusteluissa sivuttiin kunkin päivän palaverien antia ja vertailtiin eri maiden käytänteitä. Joillakin edustajilla oli jopa maataloustaustaa. Niinpä keskustelu helposti lipsahti viljanviljelyyn ja karjan kasvattamiseen.
Viimeisen päivän esittelykohteeksi oli valikoitunut todella upea Cabárcenon luonnonpuisto Cantabrian vuoristossa. Alueella on sijainnut vanha rautakaivos, koska maaperä on varsin rautapitoista. Valtava avokaivos on muutettu vehreäksi eläinpuistoksi, jossa monet Afrikasta tutut eläimet voivat laumoina vaeltaa puolivapaina. Alueen tiestöä voi vaeltaa jalan ja polkupyörillä tai kuten me, bussilla. Alueella on myös muutamia riippuhissiratoja. Yhtä niistä mekin pääsimme kokeilemaan.

Puistokäynnin jälkeen olikin jo rivakasti suunnattava kohti Bilbaon lentokenttää, josta KLM:n Cityhopper tuli meitä noutamaan välilaskulle Amsterdamiin. Puolen yön jälkeen laskeuduimme Helsinkiin. Siellä vastassa olikin -4 C pakkanen ja muutama sentti lunta maassa.
Kaiken kaikkiaan matka oli mieltä avartava. Miten monella tavalla voidaankaan aktivoida eri maiden paikallisia asukkaita ja tukea samalla paikallista yritystoimintaa! Kokousväki oli rennon ystävällistä, heidän kanssaan oli helppo jopa ystävystyä. Paikalliset espanjalaiset toimijat olivat tehneet hienoa työtä konferenssin ja sen oheistoimintojen järjestelyissä. The Kosken kohinat on the world map
In March, the Koski association received a rare invitation from Markku Lehikoinen, the leader of the LOTTI Interreg Europe project coordinated by Päijät-Hämeen Liitto. An example of a local identity maintainer was needed for the next meeting of the project to be held in the Spanish province of Cantabria at the end of April. In this sense, the online publication Kosken kohinat, which has already grown to almost 8 years old, had attracted Markku’s attention. In Cantabria, the purpose was to present the good practices of different countries. Päijänne-Leader’s leading expert Jukka-Pekka Jauhiainen was also going on the trip to present the Open Villages concept, which for ten years has been marketing village life to both current and new residents.
The undersigned from the board of the association was selected as the presenter of Kosken kohinat. We briefly presented the practices of different countries in advance via the Internet in a Teams meeting on April 10, 2024. The actual gathering took place on April 17-19, 2024. At that time, project representatives from Finland, Spain, Poland, Ireland, France and Italy gathered in the beautiful city of Santander in northern Spain.
On the first day of the meeting, we traveled to the nearby town of Torrelavega. In the Chamber of Commerce building, we had a meeting with OECD representatives about how citizens could better participate in the decision-making about which projects the EU finances. Then we got to know the La Lechere art center as an example of the industrial revolution. There, the premises of the former milk powder factory are being renovated into an art center, of course respecting the industrial and artistic history.
In Santander, we enjoyed dinner quite late in the local way. The La Taberna de Herrero restaurant offered a generous spread of seafood delicacies. The weather in the city was also mild in the evening, while during the day the temperature rose up to +16 degrees. From time to time it rained in the region, probably partly because of the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean.
On the second day of the meeting, we again traveled to the city of Torrelavega. There were now representatives of the European administration of Cantabria and the administration of the city of Torrelavega. We also learned about the versatile youth training that takes place in the conference building. During the lunch break, we also got to enjoy the delicacies produced by the house’s training kitchen. Then it was time for the project’s stakeholders to present the good practices of each country.
After the palaver, the presenters had some time to explore the city center on foot. I wanted to photograph the urban environment. At the same time, I could get some goodies for home.
We enjoyed dinner again in Santander, this time at the Bodega la Conveniente restaurant. In connection with the evening parties, there was a lot of happy interaction with the representatives of different countries. In the discussions, each day’s meetings were discussed and the practices of different countries were compared. Some representatives even had an agricultural background. So the conversation easily slipped into grain farming and raising livestock.
The really wonderful Cabárceno natural park in the Cantabrian mountains was selected as the presentation destination of the last day. An old iron mine has been located in the area, because the soil is quite rich in iron. The huge open-pit mine has been turned into a green animal park, where many animals familiar from Africa can roam semi-free in herds. You can explore the area’s roads on foot and by bicycle or, like us, by bus. There are also a few cable cars in the area. We also got to try one of them.
After visiting the park, we had to quickly head towards Bilbao airport, where KLM’s Cityhopper came to pick us up for the stopover in Amsterdam. After midnight we landed in Helsinki. There it was -4 C cold and a few centimeters of snow on the ground.
All in all, the trip was mind-opening. There are so many ways to activate local residents of different countries and support local businesses at the same time! The people at the meeting were casually friendly, it was even easy to make friends with them. The local Spanish actors had done a great job in organizing the conference and its related activities.
